AquaFoam
Protein Skimmers
Protein Skimming, or
foam fractionation, is a valuable mode of filtration
when used with closed-recirculating systems. Both saltwater
as well as freshwater systems can benefit from protein
skimming especially with systems carrying intense fish
loads.
Only

How
It Works
Protein Skimming is accomplished by injecting "Micro-Fine"
air bubbles into the water stream (venturi injector) entering
the contact reactor.
The "Water-Air" mixture is held inside the contact
reactor for a predetermined retention time (60-120 seconds).
During this retention time, the fine air bubbles are given
the chance to accumulate dissolved organic wastes and
tiny particles on their bubble walls.
The many "Micro-Fine" air bubbles, laden with
organic waste eventually rise to the top of the contact
reactor where a dense foam collimates.
Once the foam collimates at the top of the reactor, it
begins to slowly but continuously climb upwards into a
foam collimation tube/s where it works its way out of
the reactor, falling into the waste collector. When foam
exits the reactor the protein skimming process is complete. |

| Note:
Waste effluent will vary from a light colored, yellowish
liquid to a dark green. A dark color effluent has less
water content, representing a more concentrated waste.
Dropping the water level inside the reactor and increasing
the foam collimation time will produce a more concentrated
waste effluent. |

Our exclusive "Dual-Venturi Air Injection Manifold”
allows precise air/ozone injection adjustments. This
dual venturi injector arrangement allows one injector
to be adjusted to the ozone equipment’s precise
requirements while the other injector operates independently.
2. The inlet’s pressure gauge
allows for precise adjustments between the venturi injectors
and the manifold’s raw water feed to the contact
vessel.
3. The waste collector can be easily
disassembled for periodic cleaning, if required, and
is constructed of durable PVC.
4. Connect our waste collector’s
wash-down nozzle to a pressurized fresh water source
to remove solids that will accumulate on the foam collimating
tubes inside the waste collector.
5. The outlet port’s valve controls
the column height inside the reactor vessel during operation.
An outlet stand-pipe can be added to ensure a precise
water level.
6. The Opaque Heavy-Wall PVC construction
eliminates algae growth inside the vessel while increasing
durability and longevity. The PVC body’s durability
also lends itself to resistance from shipping damage.

Water flowing through the contact vessel is recirculated
by the “Dual Venturi Air Injection Manifold”.
This dual venturi injector arrangement allows for independent,
precise injector adjustments that are critical especially
with the use of ozone.
2. Our inlet pressure gauge, critical
to operating efficiency, identifies the pressure before
the venturi injectors.
3. The venturi injector manifold’s
pump supplies water to the venturi manifold and waste
collector wash-down nozzle.
4. The outlet port’s valve controls
the column height inside the reactor vessel during operation.
An outlet stand-pipe can be added to ensure a precise
water level.
5. The waste collector can be easily

| Combining
Ozone with Protein Skimming
Ozone
is an unstable oxidizer and therefore we recommend its
use only in freshwater applications. Combining protein
skimming and ozone enhance foam collimation performance
by reducing bubble size and oxidizing dissolved organic
wastes.
WARNING: Using ozone requires careful
consideration. Ozone off-gas, entering the atmosphere,
is hazardous to humans and animals in a confined area.
Also, uncontrolled ozone residuals in the water may
affect the system’s inhabitants causing damage
to tissue or even death.
Another important consideration when implementing ozone,
is the purity of gas being fed to the ozone generator.
Humidity and nitrogen (80% nitrogen in air) can easily
and quickly foul the generator’s internal ozone
producing components rendering it useless.
When preparing the feed gas, removing moisture prior
to the ozone generator is critical to the equipment’s
efficiency. Ozone output can be tripled by stripping
nitrogen from the air and supplying the ozone generator
with 97% oxygen while keeping the generator clean and
free of nitrogen by-products.
