UV Lamp Technology
Not all
UV lamps are designed to achieve the same objective and not
all UV manufacturers represent their equipment accurately.
This is a warning to you the consumer. The information that
EA provides you with here will reveal critical
UV lamp characteristics, giving you a better understanding
of what UV lamp “value” is.
|
| UV-C
Output
– Perhaps the most elusive UV lamp
performance characteristic is “UV-C Output” and
not because the information is not available but rather due
to many UV manufacturers ignoring it. These manufacturers put
far too much emphasis on Input Wattage which is only half of
the UV lamp performance equation. Input Watts sent
to the lamp from the transformer are converted into % UV-C Output
Watts. It is the UV-C Output Watts that are used for germicidal
disinfection. Low-Pressure UV Lamps produce the highest percent
UV-C Output Watts from initial Input Watts (34% - 38%) when
compared to medium pressure lamps (7% - 9%). |
| Lamp
Length – The greater the UV lamp length, the
greater the UV exposure area. A UV Lamp’s % UV-C Output
combined with its “Arc Length” both contribute
to establishing the UV exposure area.
UV Lamp Power Source
– The relationship between the transformer and UV lamp
is critical to the lamp’s overall performance (useful
life and UV-C Output). For instance, supplying G36T5 (40 Watt)
lamp with 40 Input Watts will deliver 14 UV-C Output Watts.
It will also provide 9,000 hrs. of continual operation until
reaching 60% efficient. Increasing the Input Watts to this
lamp will also increase the UV-C Output Watts but decrease
its useful lamp life by over-driving it.
UV Lamp Useful Life – End of “Useful
Lamp Life” is the percent operating efficiency (from
new condition) of the lamp after a specific length of continuous
operation. Matching the correct power source (transformer)
to the lamp ensures expected lamp life performance. UV lamps
are susceptible to solarization (mercury plating out on the
inside surface of the lamp’s glass envelope) that absorbs
UV light. All EA lamps are chemically treated and as a result
increase the lamp’s end of lamp life performance from
60% to 80%.
